Singing Over Me // Voice of Truth
Zephaniah 3:17 NLT
“For the Lord your God is living among you.
He is a mighty savior.
He will take delight in you with gladness.
With his love, he will calm all your fears.
He will rejoice over you with joyful songs.”
Ever listen to inspired music? I find it is a channel for God to speak. Here is one story that reminds me of His miracles through song.
48 hours before I was to start over, all over. It had been six years since I’d been in the classroom as a student teacher. Six years since I had had my first mental breakdown, three short years since my diagnosis and these lyrics woke me from my sleep. The line “I’ve tried before and failed…” echoed in my head. Even though this may seem like a discouraging line, I knew this Casting Crowns song was good. I didn’t know the name of the song or the rest of the lyrics. So, I crawled out of bed and sunk into the pooh-bah chair with my smart phone and googled the few lines that had been sung over me in my sleep. This is what I read (emphasis mine):
Voice of Truth.
“Oh, what I would do to have
The kind of faith it takes
To climb out of this boat I'm in
Onto the crashing waves
To step out of my comfort zone
Into the realm of the unknown where Jesus is
And He's holding out His hand
But the waves are calling out my name
And they laugh at me
Reminding me of all the times
I've tried before and failed
The waves they keep on telling me
Time and time again. "Boy, you'll never win!"
"You'll never win!"
But the voice of truth tells me a different story
The voice of truth says, "Do not be afraid!"
The voice of truth says, "This is for My glory"
Out of all the voices calling out to me
I will choose to listen and believe the voice of truth
Oh what I would do to have
The kind of strength it takes to stand before a giant
With just a sling and a stone
Surrounded by the sound of a thousand warriors
Shaking in their armor
Wishing they'd have had the strength to stand
But the giant's calling out my name
And he laughs at me
Reminding me of all the times
I've tried before and failed
The giant keeps on telling me
Time and time again. "Boy you'll never win!"
"You'll never win!"
But the stone was just the right size
To put the giant on the ground
And the waves they don't seem so high
From on top of them lookin' down
I will soar with the wings of eagles
When I stop and listen to the sound of Jesus
Singing over me
I will choose to listen and believe the voice of truth'“
I began to cry and shake, the lyrics spoke so clearly to me. I had tried before and failed, but the last few lines transformed me – “When I stop and listen to the sound of Jesus singing over me - I will choose to listen and believe the Voice of Truth”
Jesus woke me up that morning to an inspired song. A giant assurance to hush the giant fears. In 2013, I graduated with my second degree in Elementary Education. Jesus proved to me that His song is always the song to listen to and believe – because HE is the Voice of Truth.
He speaks and I encourage you to listen.
““For the Lord your God is living among you.
He is a mighty savior.
He will take delight in you with gladness.
With his love, he will calm all your fears.
He will rejoice over you with joyful songs.””
